In-kind giving

More than $20,000 of BARC's work goes to other local nonprofits every year.

BARC is a Traverse City, Michigan non-profit company, and giving back is built into how it runs. The gifts are not cash. They are the things BARC already does well: compostables, waste services and support for the fundraising events that keep other Northern Michigan nonprofits going.

Two pages on BARC's own site put numbers on it, and they are not the same number. The About page says the company gives on average over $25,000 a year in in-kind goods and services. The Charitable Giving page says more than $23,500 in the last year. Both support one safe sentence, more than $20,000 every year, and that is the one used here.

What the giving is made of

Compostables, waste services, event support

Those are the three kinds BARC names. Each one is a stream the company already runs for customers, so the giving is the same work pointed at other local nonprofits.

  1. Stream one

    01 Compostables

BARC supplies compostables to local businesses, and compostables are the first kind of giving it names. For a nonprofit running a dinner, a tasting or a fun run, plates and cups that go to compost instead of the dumpster change what the cleanup looks like.

  2. Stream two

    02 Waste services

Bins, hauling and sorting are the work that fills the 2026-27 price sheet. When a nonprofit needs a load moved or a stream sorted, that is the kind of service BARC counts in its giving.

  3. Stream three

    03 Fundraising event support

A fundraiser produces a pile of cups, bottles and cardboard by ten o'clock at night. Zero waste event support puts the right bin in the right spot and carries the sorting afterward so volunteers can go home.

The business side of the same streams is on the compostables page and the zero waste events page.

Why this stream exists

A recycling company that is a non-profit

On the Charitable Giving page BARC puts it this way: “No other organization focuses exclusively on recycling hard to dispose of materials, supplying compostables to local businesses and hosting zero waste events.” That narrow focus is what BARC has to give. The company says it keeps reinvesting its profit in the community, and the in-kind giving is one visible way it does that.

For the people, trucks and plants behind it, read the BARC community page.

Give, or ask for support

To donate, call (231) 632-2272 or email info@mybarc.org. If your own nonprofit has a fundraiser coming up and you want to know what BARC can do for it, use the same number and ask. Someone at the Traverse City office can tell you what is possible.
