DE/RE

De/Re Construction

Where Affordable Housing Meets Recycling. BARC deconstructs homes slated for demolition and puts the salvage back to work.

Taking a house apart instead of knocking it down

De/Re Construction is BARC's answer to the dumpster full of a demolished house. When a home in the Traverse City area is slated for demolition, our crew deconstructs it: doors and windows come out whole, trusses come down on a crane, lumber is pulled and de-nailed, and what can be used again leaves the site as material instead of rubble.

BARC does this at demolition market rates, so choosing deconstruction does not mean paying a premium to keep a house out of the landfill. The salvage has a destination before the first board comes down, which is the point of the program.

What the homeowner gets

BARC offers the homeowner a tax rebate on top of the demolition market rate. It is the part of the offer people ask about first, and the honest answer on how it applies to your house is a phone call: ring (231) 632-2272 and we will walk through your project before anything is scheduled.

The program is open to local homeowners. If a house you own, or one you are closing out for family, is headed for demolition, call before the demolition contractor does. Once the walls are down, the materials are gone.

Where the salvage goes next

The headline for this program is Where Affordable Housing Meets Recycling, and the reason is simple: the framing, doors, windows and roofing pulled off one house become the starting material for the next small one. BARC builds tiny homes from that salvage, and each one comes out unique because each source house was.

Smaller pieces become picnic tables, flower boxes, trellises and coops. A builder partner list is coming soon. If you build or remodel in Northern Michigan and want first look at reclaimed material, tell us when you call.
