Why a mattress is a 40 cubic foot problem
A mattress is the bulkiest thing most households ever put out for disposal. Recycling one saves a 40 cubic foot, gas-emitting pocket from our landfills, and that is before you count the truck trips it takes to bury it. Pulled apart, a mattress is steel, foam and fabric, and each of those has somewhere better to go than a hole in the ground.
Michigan landfills take in over 400,000 mattresses each year. BARC is one of the reasons that number can come down in Northern Michigan: mattress materials are processed and shipped out of the Kaleva facility at 14407 Industrial Dr, and the Traverse City site takes them at the drop-off door.
Bring one to 466 US-31 South in Traverse City, or schedule a pickup. Pickups are generally scheduled each Monday and BARC can't promise an exact arrival time. The pickup fee is $100 within a 35 mile radius of both facilities, added to the price of the mattress itself.
